
Atkinson works as a nonviolence educator in city schools, a therapist with teens, and one of the directors at a Violence Shelter. He is one of few males actively engaged in domestic violence and sexual assault prevention activities. He has degrees in Art, Behavioral Science, and Social Work.
Atkinson practices a wide range of artistic styles and media. In addition to comic art, Atkinson also creates handmade jewelry, beadwork, woodburning design, graphic design, painting, figure drawing, and collage. He is also a musician, performing on cello, Indigenous flute, and composes. An example of his music can be heard here.
He was recognized by the band Rage Against the Machine as "Freedom Fighter of the Month" for his work in violence prevention and participation in activism for American Indian sovereignty rights.
Atkinson also campaigns against abusive sweatshop practices by large retailers by lecturing to audiences, distributing research, and donating original art to supporters of Fair Trade.
